Allan C. Ornstein is a professor of education at St. John’s University. Dr. Ornstein has published more than 400 articles and 60 books. His latest books are Wealth vs. Work: How 1% Victimize 99% (Author House, 2012) and Excellence vs. Equality: Can Society Achieve Both Goals? (Paradigm Publishers, 2015). Francis P. Hunkins was a professor of education specializing in general curriculum, curriculum development, curriculum issues, and curriculum theory in the College of Education at the University of Washington for 35 years. Since retiring, Dr. Hunkins has remained active in writing educational textbooks. As a past president, he also remains active in the Association for Teaching and Curriculum. During his tenure at the University of Washington, Dr. Hunkins served as chairperson of the area of curriculum and instruction (1995–2000). He also consulted widely with school systems around the country. He twice was a visiting scholar at Monash University in Australia and was also a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 1999. Over his career, he has written 21 educational textbooks and numerous articles for educational journals. He makes his home with his wife, Dr. Patricia A. Hammill, in the Seattle area.

Norman Eng is an adjunct assistant professor at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College and City College of New York. His work focuses on twenty first century education reform and inequality. He recently co edited a special issue symposium on Amazon.com and other websites, “Twenty first Century Excellence in Education” (Society, 2015), which included contributions from scholars such as Nel Noddings, Carol Ann Tomlinson, Yong Zhao, and James Comer. Dr. Eng maintains an education blog called The Educated Society.

In fact, James did not set foot outside the confines of Stirling until he was eleven, when he took control of the country. But even with power in his hands, he would never feel safe. For the rest of his life, he could be caught up in bitter struggles between the warring political and religious factions who fought for control over his mind and body.

Following his biography of the quintessential Elizabethan, Philip Sydney, Stewart tackles the Stuarts with a political treatment of how James VI of Scotland (1567-1625) became James I of England. James's family background and early life in Scotland would have made a fine Jacobean tragedy-his father, Lord Darnley, was murdered with the apparent complicity of his doomed mother, Mary, along with a backstabbing court. Crowned as an infant, James spent his childhood as a political chess piece for various regents' ambitions, and he became jumpy if not slightly paranoid. By adulthood, he had learned enough realpolitik to play off the factious lairds and the Presbyterian kirk, survive rebellions and assassination attempts, and maintain Scotland's traditional European ties. Throughout, Stewart notes, he successfully cultivated Elizabeth I to become her heir. The tactics that had served James well in Scotland, however, did not adapt well to his new country, much less unify the new "Britain." James clashed with Commons, alienated Puritans, cracked down on Catholics, entangled his foreign alliances and invited scandal at court with favoritism (sometimes homoerotic). Although Stewart doesn't dwell on high points like the Gunpowder Plot or the King James Bible, he adds color to his narrative of nonstop plotting and politicking with choice extracts from contemporary records, clandestine correspondence and the occasional lampoon. Timed for the 400th anniversary of James's accession to the British throne this year, this is a thorough if narrowly focused courtside life of the "sovereign who gave his name to the Jacobean age, but who was never truly of it."

The first ruler of Britain, almost a capable plotter

What machinations! The court of the Tudors and Stuarts in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century were not easy places to navigate. For a young boy left by his mother to the in-fighting of Lairds and nobles it was an even more difficult place. It would be considered tragic now, that a boy like James should be used as a pawn for others gains, but for his time it was simply a game, and a game with huge wins and losses.

Alan Stewarts book is almost very very good but I felt it fell short on many points. It is a highly readable work, and it covers some excellent matieral I had never read about before - the plotting and constant scheming of the courts. It also, to my relief, treated the issues in context to the time. There was no moralising about what happened, but it was very much presentation of the facts and their consequences.

James VI of Scotland had grown up literally an orphan with his mother imprisoned in England and then beheaded. While he managed to manipulate the Scottish court, the intricacies of the British Court escaped him and his ability to rule England was often compromised. Perhaps too, in comparison to Elizabeth I he paled in significance in all aspects.

This is a pretty good presentation of the first of the Stuart Kings who lasted little more than a century - but in that time managed a huge amount of upheaval to the British landscape and temperament.

The Scottish take over

Often books about European royalty are so complex that the reader needs to have a finger forever on family trees as he/she wades though the chapters. This book about a critical leader in our Anglo-Saxon past is very easy to read and provides some important new information and highlights the critical bonds between England and Scotland at the end of the Tudor era. I highly recommend this very readable book

Fine biography of a complex life

This biography of James can be roughly divided into three sections. First is the incredibly complex web of intrigue and shifting political in-fighting that James faced in Scotland. Stewart does a very good job of giving the reader a mental map of who was fighting whom, the relationship of James to his mother Mary and how, as a child and then young adult, James managed to survive the chaos. Making sense of this without oversimplifying it is a challenge and Stewart deserves high praise for his clarity here. This background on James in the development of his personality and interests is essential to understanding the later life of the king.

The second part of the book is the first dozen years or so of James's reign in England. I found this the high point of the book. Stewart does a superb job of tying James's personality, interests and habits to the development of the English Reformation. I thought his lengthy and well-written description of James as religious thinker and religious mediator in England were exceptional. Likewise, James's habits of life as an adult are dealt with in an even-handed yet absorbing way. Stewart shows how James's thoughtful intelligence balanced his desires about his "favourites" and prevented the reign from becoming a 17th century version of Edward II. (James's insights and high intelligence in dialogue with his personal and political desires appears throughout the book.) I also liked Stewart's description of the love/threat relationship between James and his son Henry. Finally, what stood out for me in this section was how James's arguments and disagreements with Parliament laid the seed for future conflicts after his death. These chapters are the heart of the book.

The last third or so of the book is much more about James's relationships with other nations. The chapter called "Of Jack, and Tom" is about the curious and fascinating not-so-secret journey of his son Charles and James's favourite Buckingham to Spain under assumed names to prepare for a marriage between Charles and the Spanish Infanta. This is great stuff, part Monte Python and part a religious version of Secret Agent. But overall I found the last part of the book "rushed" in a way that the first two parts were not. Unlike the equally complex events in Scotland in the first part, here names and places are not as well-explained. I found the chapter called "The Peacemaker," which centers around James's desire to be the mediator of Europe's problems, the weakest in the book. Nevertheless, I do not mean to imply that this is a major issue. It was for me a minor blip in a strong biography.

The greatest strength of the book lies in the smooth transition throughout between James's personality and his kingship. This is a fine biography of one of England's most unusual and interesting kings.

Decent book, the title does say "primer"

I thought this book was very entry level but that was exactly what the editors were going for. You will find this book useful if you have an understanding of biology and basic mendelian genetics but have never had any additional genetics. It is a good introduction for those with minimal to no experience with population/conservation genetics but are intimidated by the larger population genetics specific texts. If you looking for a through introduction to conservation genetics this is not the book (go straight to the big books, an excellent choice is Genetics of Populations, Fourth Edition (2011)) , but it you just want to get your feet wet this will be more than sufficient to familiarize you with the basic principles.
I agree with the previous reviewer I feel the price is a bit steep seeing how you can get a far more in-depth text for the same price or often less.

I found this book to be a very easy read. I enjoyed it very much. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. It's uplifting, warm, encouraging, and I would highly recommend it to others.

Surrender All is a well written book and it tell about the author and her family and many more on her TV show. Joni Lamb is a tremendous Christian wife and mother. I bought two of her books one for my daughter and one for me.

"Surrender All: Your Answer To Living with Peace, Power & Purpose" by Joni Lamb is a fairly quick, easy read that at times can come across as a little trite especially if you have recently suffered a type of crisis or tragedy in your life that she addresses in the book. However, just when you decide that she is oversimplifying some of life's greatest struggles, Mrs. Lamb will surprise you with a thought-provoking statement.

She discusses surrender in several areas of our lives such as marriage, children, career, and loss. Joni recounts dramatic, almost unbelievable at times, stories of extraordinary people who have had to surrender to God in the most difficult of circumstances. In fact, some of the stories she shares could have entire books written about them and really couldn't be covered in depth enough in this book which left me feeling as though she were a little bit flippant with them.

She also uses her own personal experience to share her uplifting, encouraging message of surrendering your all to God. Joni constantly reassures us that God will mend and restore all aspects of our lives including finances, health and relationships if we will just surrender them to Him. However, she is also very careful to make sure we understand that God hasn't promised us a life of ease as His children and that surrender doesn't guarantee a worry-free existence. Sometimes she flirts a little with the "prosperity gospel" or "name it and claim it theology" but mostly her advice seems to be grounded in Scripture. Most importantly, she makes sure to share the most significant story of surrender: Jesus.

Overall, Mrs. Lamb's book is an interesting read that should encourage you to examine your own life for areas that need surrender in order to bring about the peace you are longing for.

A good attempt, but lacks depth and often is Trite

A good attempt, but I couldn't like it like I wanted to. Perhaps its because I recently re-read Nayyirah Waheed's Salt and it was impossible not to compare the depth and realness of them both (and perhaps that was unfair, she is in a class all her own)
This book just fell flat to me. Had a few good pieces, but overall it was very shallow and read more like the author parroting well known emotions and feelings, but nothing felt spot on. Few felt original. It felt like the author read some other authors who use this style and said "i can do that" and parroted things into a book. Maybe it was rushed. I don't know.
Perhaps this book will be good for someone who requires less depth and originality, but overall I just didnt feel it. And I REALLY wanted to... like REALLY wanted to... but it fell flat.

Self Love

Poetry is always difficult to review as everyone takes something different out of it or maybe they don't understand it.
This book has a lot to do with self love and reminding yourself that you are good enough, you are great, you are beautiful.
It discusses the pain of loving someone who you thought loved you back but later learn that what they said were just words to them with no real meaning. It discusses how it's not your fault and that's something we all need to hear.
This is telling you to love yourself, focus on you, and so many other wonderful things.
I would recommend this collection of poems to anyone who is looking for a slight pick me up, who needs to be reminded how great they truly are.

I love everything about both books, it has taught me what and what not to allow in my life at this point and even though I knew what to do this book reassure me I was on the right path, thank you R.H. Sin you have no idea how much I appreciate these two books volume 1 & 2

About the Author

Neha Narkhede is co-founder and CTO at Confluent, a company backing the popular Apache Kafka messaging system. Prior to founding Confluent, Neha led streams infrastructure at LinkedIn, where she was responsible for LinkedIn’s streaming infrastructure built on top of Apache Kafka and Apache Samza. She is one of the initial authors of Apache Kafka and a committer and PMC member on the project.

Gwen Shapira is a system architect at Confluent helping customers achieve success with their Apache Kafka implementation. She has 15 years of experience working with code and customers to build scalable data architectures, integrating relational and big data technologies. She currently specializes in building real-time reliable data processing pipelines using Apache Kafka. Gwen is an Oracle Ace Director, an author of "Hadoop Application Architectures", and a frequent presenter at data driven conferences. Gwen is also a committer on the Apache Kafka and Apache Sqoop projects.

Todd is a Staff Site Reliability Engineer at LinkedIn, tasked with keeping the largest deployment of Apache Kafka, Zookeeper, and Samza fed and watered. He is responsible for architecture, day-to-day operations, and tools development, including the creation of an advanced monitoring and notification system. Todd is the developer of the open source project Burrow, a Kafka consumer monitoring tool, and can be found sharing his experience on Apache Kafka at industry conferences and tech talks. Todd has spent over 20 years in the technology industryrunning infrastructure services, most recently as a Systems Engineer at Verisign, developing service management automation for DNS, networking, and hardware management, as well as managing hardware and software standards across the company.

Good Book

Some of Lennon's best songs are on here, but some of them I don't know to well. There are also alot of songs written by Yoko Ono which I'm not to big a fan of hers. Anyways, stick with playing the Lennon songs and you will be alright.

I find this book unputdownable, even though it fills me at times with despair, disgust and irritation. Kenneth Williams was a British actor and comedian of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an acute intelligence and a unique gift for comedy. He was gay, and for many years of his working life homosexuality was illegal. His comic persona used the "camp" stereotype and private language in a way that was far funnier than others in the same (small) field, or anyone since (Julian Clary, Graham Norton). He was widely read, inventive and gifted at ad libbing and eventually earned a living on chat shows and panel games. He had many friends in the theatre who obviously enjoyed his company. He was an excellent writer, one of the things that makes this diary worth reading. His writing is often as funny and perceptive as you'd expect from his public persona, revealing the surreal in the ordinary. But the diary also reveals a man with a dark side, someone who never found a way of living that made him happy. You long to say "Kenneth! Get some therapy!" His self analysis too often turns into navel gazing. He was tortured by guilt over his sexual feelings, constantly making contradictory statements and apparently trying to persuade himself he was above all that. He could also behave appallingly to people -- all faithfully recorded. He clearly came home and wrote the diary, justifying what he'd done. He certainly brooded over wrongs, but he often records apologising and making up. He has flashes of self-insight - that he really only feels at home among people outside his theatrical set. He really was extremely talented - and bigheaded with it. He must have been a nightmare to have in a cast, constantly thinking he knew better and trying to take over. Particularly in the early entries, he sometimes waffles on pretentiously, using long words you feel he doesn't quite understand, and giving an imitation of someone being profound. Then he'll follow the pomposity with a hilarious bit of observation written in a direct and slangy way. As a warts and all portrait, this is unequalled. And incidentally gives a fascinating insight into the stage/screen/radio/TV of the period. Sadly, he took his own life.
