En bonne forme is a fully integrated Intermediate French program, based on the conviction that a solid knowledge of French grammar is essential for solid acquisition of the language. Although the core of each chapter is the grammar section, students are given ample opportunity throughout to improve all four skills--reading, writing, listening, and speaking. All of the grammar explanations and exercise directions are given in French to encourage greater acquisition of the language. Reading selections, carefully chosen to illustrate the grammar structures presented in each chapter, are immediately reinforced with exercises.

About the Author
Simone Renaud was born in France, raised in Morocco (North Africa), and studied for seven years in the Sorbonne where her degrees (Licence de lettres classiques, CAPES de Lettres Modernes, Diplome de professeur de franAais A l'A(c)tranger) prepared her for teaching French abroad. Her teaching experience includes teaching French in Geneva (Switzerland) for Smith College and teaching all levels, from beginners to Master Degree classes and assistants programs, at the University of Oregon in Eugene and at San Jose State University. She created and ran for many years the Alliance FranAaise of Santa Cruz, CA, where she is retired. In addition, Professor Renaud has authored many successful French textbooks.

Dr. Dominique van Hooff is a French native who specialized in French modern literature both in France and in the US. She currently chairs the Foreign Language Department at San Jose State University. She has taught all levels of classes in French from elementary to graduate at several universities. An active and well-known scholar in her field, she has authored many articles and books (3 textbooks) and has made numerous presentations both on scholarly literary subjects and methods of teaching French throughout the world. Professor van Hooff served as President of the AATF for Northern California for 9 years. She is a Knight in the order of the French Academic Palms.

Excellent French grammar

My semi-private class of three students and our wonderful teacher have been working through this book for about a year and I find it extremely comprehensive, although sometimes I gloss over the minutia thinking I'll never have to use that. So far I can't think of a single point of French grammar that is overlooked. It's written in French too. Best for someone who has already learned some of the basics.

All the information required to assemble antennas and antenna kits that can be deployed in multiple configurations is provided.


Special attention is given to wire antennas deployed at low heights above ground, a situation confronted by operators on the move. Special attention is also given to NVIS (Near Vertical Incident Skywave) communications, which is also optimum with low antenna elevation. NVIS propagation enables communications in the 50-500 mile range regardless of terrain and independent of repeaters.

With two or three low suspension points (8-20 ft.), one can deploy wire antennas that cover the 160-30 meter bands (those capable of NVIS propagation) with performance optimized for NVIS communication.

With a single high suspension point that can be improvised from one or two tall trees, buildings or cliff faces and one of the antenna launch systems described here, one can deploy multiple antenna options that can be configured from the modular antenna kit. These include inverted V resonant or random wire dipoles, long wire antennas, sloper dipoles and inverted L antennas for efficient all-band regional use. It also covers terminated V beam and inverted half rhombic beam antennas optimized for 20-10 meters while being broad band (no tuner required), low noise gain equal to or greater than a high dipole.

With two medium to high suspension points (15-80 ft. depending on the band), one can install half square wire antennas that produce high gain low angle radiation that is optimum for DX operation. Dropping one of the wire curtains converts the same antenna into a general coverage multi-band inverted L.

With the versatility of the modular antenna components described here, one can quickly assemble, deploy and dis-assemble and roll up high performance wire antennas that are adaptable to nearly any operating environment and communications objective.

This book is written for the Radio Amateur reader, and, aa such, it contains a large amount of practical Antenna design information for the "Ham" community. Possibly the strongest descriptor of the book is that it is near encyclopedic in its coverage of wire antennas. For each configuration discussedl the author includes simple sketches, and often, practical suggestions for how to get the most out of the configuration.

This reviewer has a professional background in antenna design, and I am happy to say that nothing was found in this book which appears incorrect or bad advice. On the other hand, nothing much new was found, either! Rather, the book is a comprehensive descriptive review of many different antenna configurations and designs, some of which have received little attention in recent years.

Antenna design for an amateur station often is a search for a best compromise between desired performance, physical limitations, available space, frequency coverage and similar practical considerations. In the search for the best compromise for any specific installation, this book will provide the non professional reader with a comprehensive overview of the many possibilities and assist the radio amateur reader in considering the full field of possible solutions to a specific set of practical limitations.

About the Author
Eliot Jacobson, Ph.D., was professor of mathematics and computer science for over 25 years. In 2005, he launched his second career as an independent consultant for the casino industry. After writing two books, The Blackjack Zone (2005) and Contemporary Casino Table Game Design (2010), Dr. Jacobson decided to turn his blog, APHeat.net, into this book. Required addition to advantage player library

The ideal purchaser for this book is someone already profitable at Blackjack and reasonably well bankrolled. The book is broken down into 5 major areas: Blackjack, Blackjack side bets, Baccarat, Other Games, and the exploitation of marketing and promotions. For a traveling professional player, the most important area is Blackjack Side bets, with over 100 pages analyzing 34 different props. The analysis for this (and all other problems it attacks) discusses the house advantage for each, possible ways to beat each with various counting schemes, and your likely return using these different schemes.

Much of the remainder of the book discusses hole-carding strategy and collusion strategy. For most problems, a strategy for a game is analyzed assuming knowledge of a dealer card (or in some scenarios, face card/no face card) with likely edges.

There is much analysis of freeplays, rebates and promotions. Most pros are already familiar with the advantages of these and how to optimize your play with these.

One concept I have not seen in other books is a desirability index for each game, which combines the profitability and variance into a single number to rank different games. The author explains his methodology, and provides his quantitative ranking of all the various side games. With this chart, if you see a game with which you are unfamiliar, you can quickly look up the index, and decide if it is worth the time playing (and learning the strategy).

I have two criticisms. First, the author doesn't have experience successfully exploiting this information. By comparison, James Grossjean in Beyond Counting: Exhibit CAA (another math heavy book focusing on exploiting casino games, but not publicly available) has much more experience with what he describes. Jacobson's description of most games is rather dry; they are presented as exploitable numbers, but there are very few anecdotal experiences describing where something went horrifically wrong (or amazingly well).

Second, the author writes with a split personality. The book claims to be geared towards both advantage players, as well as casino game protection. The book is clearly written for the former, with only an afterthought about protecting the games. The author goes so far as to design a feasible team collusion system for playing High Card Flush, and analyze the edge (at 4%). Other "game protection" advice includes: let card counters play, because they don't hurt you very much.

Despite my criticisms, I gave it 5 stars because it belongs in any casino gambler's library, and most of this information is not available in other books. If you are looking for another source for advantage play, try to find Beyond Counting: exhibit CAA by James Grossjean. If you are looking for a legitimate resource for game protection, Steve Forte's Casino Game Protection is the best I have read.

This is great. Concise and easy to find the information that you're looking for. Dr. Jacobson is a brilliant mathematician and has worked hard to compile all of this info in an easy to use source. Even for me, and that's saying something. And now that he has removed everything from his blog that is in this book, I could easily justify the expense. Thanks Eliot! I hope that it does well and I look forward to your next endeavor.

Oh noo! This is too much on my heart. I hope Violet is ok. I really want her to leave Miguel the hell alone. He keeps running back to Faith so let them be. He sees what he lost out on and it will hurt him even more if Violet moves on with Dom. I hope somebody puts a bullet in Faiths head real quick I'm so over her. I love Hazel. Please come on with part 2.

This book is the definitive textbook on RCM, the result of the accumulated experience of thousands of RCM reviews in nearly every industry and in dozens of countries around the world.
It presents RCM's distinctive "systems" approach to maintenance, offering sophisticated criteria for deciding among four kinds of scheduled tasks (not simply the replacement of individual non-repairable components), and equally sophisticated criteria for deciding among two other kinds of failure management policies (including redesign) if scheduled tasks are not appropriate.
If you wish to do RCM, you need this book plus a mentor to guide your early efforts. (How many of us learned to ride a bicycle without someone holding the handlebars?)
But if you simply wish to understand RCM -- you need this book.

The best RCM textbook ever written

I never cease to be amazed by some of the nonsensical comments we see on the Internet, particularly from people who read a book about an activity that requires complex skills -- discover that they can't do it without help -- and blame the book!
You won't learn to *do* RCM by reading this book, or any book -- just as you won't learn to ride a bicycle by reading a book. You'll learn to *do* it only by *doing* it -- and you'll have fewer spills on your first ride if you have help from someone who has already done it (and who knows how to teach).
But if you're not trying to learn to *do* RCM -- if all you want is to *understand* RCM, its concepts and its principles -- then stop searching and get this book. There isn't a better one out there. I've read the others, and I know.

Highly recommended reading.

In this book, Moubray has revised and brought up to date his seminal 1991 text on Reliability Centered Maintenance. As with the previous text, he clearly and concisely explains the principles behind RCM in an easily understood fashion, without having to resort to complex mathematical explanations. The diagrams and examples given in the text add to the ease of understanding. The major difference between this edition and the previous edition is increased detail and focus in those areas most likely to be of use to those attempting to apply the principles in their workplace. Highly recommended reading for anyone involved in maintenance engineering and maintenance management.
