Useful for context and history of the Middle East
By FrKurt Messick
This book was a primary text for my Middle Eastern Politics class as an undergraduate in the early 1980s. It was in the second edition at that time, and has gone through a few subsequent editions as politics of the region develops. My particular copy remains useful for history and background purposes; there are chapters on the theoretical ideas of Islam and politics in general, the implications of the post-imperial and post-colonial institutions, and the various conflicts prevalent in the region. So many tend to see the Middle East in an Israel-Arab conflict context, but this text has but one of ten chapters devoted to that particular situation.

According to the authors, `The Middle East might once have been studied as an exercise in statics, but in the last years of the twentieth century, it is a dynamic and explosive area. To be dynamic is not necessarily to change or to change in any particular direction.' In fact, Bill and Leiden see many directions, some convergent and some divergent, in which the Middle East's future is pulled. These include economic, social philosophy, modernization, globalization, and religious revolution directions. It only adds to the complexity that the policies of the United States, Russia, China, and Europe toward the region and individual states within the region fluctuate on a regular basis. Written before the current conflicts of Afghanistan and Iraq began, it speculates on an uneasy future with conflicts of different sorts - a safe prophecy with regard to the Middle East.

I continued to find useful information from the text, and recommend it to anyone seeking a greater historical appreciation of the different contexts and conflicts of the Middle East, in terms here stretching from Morocco and Algeria in the West to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the East.

The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom, by Stephen M. Stigler

What gives statistics its unity as a science? Stephen Stigler sets forth the seven foundational ideas of statistics―a scientific discipline related to but distinct from mathematics and computer science.

Even the most basic idea―aggregation, exemplified by averaging―is counterintuitive. It allows one to gain information by discarding information, namely, the individuality of the observations. Stigler’s second pillar, information measurement, challenges the importance of “big data” by noting that observations are not all equally important: the amount of information in a data set is often proportional to only the square root of the number of observations, not the absolute number. The third idea is likelihood, the calibration of inferences with the use of probability. Intercomparison is the principle that statistical comparisons do not need to be made with respect to an external standard. The fifth pillar is regression, both a paradox (tall parents on average produce shorter children; tall children on average have shorter parents) and the basis of inference, including Bayesian inference and causal reasoning. The sixth concept captures the importance of experimental design―for example, by recognizing the gains to be had from a combinatorial approach with rigorous randomization. The seventh idea is the residual: the notion that a complicated phenomenon can be simplified by subtracting the effect of known causes, leaving a residual phenomenon that can be explained more easily.

The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom presents an original, unified account of statistical science that will fascinate the interested layperson and engage the professional statistician.

Review
The hardest kind of scientific thinking concerns what’s in a field’s basement―and Stigler has brought a bright flashlight to his subterranean investigations of the ever-more-influential field of statistics. (Bradley Efron, Stanford University)

Distilled from centuries of statistical research and garnished with wit, this masterfully prepared seven-course food for thought is a real treat for anyone who wants to reason with data, big or small. (Xiao-Li Meng, Harvard University)

Statistics has a core set of ideas that touch every aspect of our lives. Stigler has tapped into these and brought them to life. (Persi Diaconis, Stanford University)

This lively account of a radically counter-intuitive past at least encourages us to question big data’s reputation. Never entrust measurement to a monarch―or judgment to a computer. (Jonathon Keats New Scientist 2016-05-21)

Wonderful…Each of the seven pillars that Stigler, in his wisdom, has hewn from the past two centuries of statistical thought provides surprising insights. (Howard Wainer Science 2016-05-13)

An excellent book on the subject it treats
By George Hariton
An excellent book on the subject it treats. Unfortunately the subject is extremely specialized, and that is not clear from either the title or the blurbs.

Stigler has long been the pre-eminent historian of statistics. In this book, not only does he identify the origins of seven very important ideas in statistics, he shows the reader at length how they originated. And there's the problem for most of us. For example, he quotes frequently and occasionally at length from the original papers and monographs (tracts, really), complete with illustrations and mathematics. This is satisfies an antiquarian interest, but I suspect that the vast majority of readers would-be readers would rather have a traditional sort of history.

Much of the story stops around 1920 or 1930. While Stigler does mention some of the techniques that have since built on the early work, it is only a couple of sentences at the end of a chapter. Some of this is useful: I had my own Aha! moment when I realized what motivated modern shrinkage techniques. But I think that you have to know an awful lot of modern statistics for this material's relevance to come through.

So for the handful of true statistical enthusiasts, this merits at least six stars. For the intelligent lay reader, less than one star. Since there are a lot more of the latter than the former, I am giving it three stars only.

The foundations of statistics were hard come by
By Nigel Seel
Every student of an abstract subject like maths, physics or even philosophy is familiar with this: you are introduced to a foundational concept yet it seems pretty counterintuitive, and you can think of a number of reasons why the said concept ought to be considered problematic. Yet somehow, the textbooks are less than sympathetic.

My advice is to check the history of the under-motivated concept. The original formulations were often so much more compelling, especially when you realise precisely what problem their authors were trying to solve. Your own misgivings may well be represented in critiques by the innovator’s contemporaries.

It was the very success of later generations which led to the wholesale reconceptualisation of their subject’s foundations.

And so it is with statistics, a subject where deep ideas are often obscured by a focus on technique, and where it sometimes seems that little distinguishes a correct line of argument from an equally plausible, but fallacious, alternative.

Professor Stephen Stigler, in this determinedly historical book, starts with a concept as apparently trivial as the mean, or average, of a sequence of observations. Even this is counterintuitive as it requires discarding information, the individuality of the observations. By what right are ‘bad’ measurements to be treated in the same way as ones we think, or know, to be of higher quality? It took quite a few years for the idea to catch on.

Stigler’s second pillar, information measurement, looks at the processing of large data sets. Opinion polls have made us somewhat aware that the accuracy of the proposed mean is proportional to the square root of the number of observations, not the absolute number.

Sampling was applied to the Royal Mint in Isaac Newton’s time, to ensure that the coins they produced used the right amount of gold. In the absence of a correct theory of standard deviation, the tolerance boundaries were set way too wide. Stigler dryly notes that Newton was warden, then master of the Royal Mint from 1696 to 1727 and that on his death in that year left a sizeable fortune. “But evidently his wealth can be attributed to investments, and there is no reason to cast suspicion that he had seen the flaw in the Mint’s procedures and exploited it for personal gain.”

Later chapters deal with hypothesis testing (pillar 3); statistical processing within the dataset itself, without reference to population norms – as in Student’s t-test (pillar 4); regression to the mean - a concept which proved very hard to pin down (pillar 5); experimental design, particularly when varying multiple qualities at the same time (pillar 6); and finally pillar 7, the notion that a complicated phenomenon may be simplified by subtracting the effect of known causes, leaving a residual phenomenon to which attention may now be focused.

If you are both interested and well-versed in statistics, you will find this book illuminating and witty. The converse also applies.

The Magic Number Seven
By Howard Wainer
Statistics, the science of uncertainty, is young as sciences go. Physics, chemistry, geology, botany and biology were firmly established long before its birth. But despite its late start the edifice that has become modern statistics is as broadly influential as its elders. But what are the big ideas that have been contributed by statistics? Too often they are looked upon as a set of arcane procedures that are implemented, without much thought, by computer algorithms described primarily by acronyms. Such a myopic view of this most modern of the sciences deprives the viewer of the accumulated product of a great deal of beautiful and subtle thinking. Stigler’s wonderful new book rides to the rescue and remedies this lack.

Stigler’s title echoes that of T.E. Lawrence’s iconic 1926 memoir of his military adventures in Arabia, which in turn was taken from Proverbs 9:1 -- “Wisdom hath built her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars". Each of the seven pillars that Stigler, in his wisdom, has hewn from the past two centuries of statistical thought provides the reader with surprising insights.

The first pillar on which stands the edifice of modern statistics is Aggregation; one manifestation of this is taking a mean. The powerful idea that we can gain deeper understanding of a mass of data by summarizing them into a single number is revolutionary. Who would have guessed, without a lot of experience, that we learn more by disregarding information!

The second of Stigler’s pillars is Information. This too is an idea with surprising implications. We are all used to De Moivre’s equation that shows that the accuracy of a data summary improves as the square root of the number of observations. But what this means is that as we gather more information the value of each additional piece is less than that which preceded it! Thus if we want to double the precision of a measurement we need to quadruple the data sample. Curiouser and curiouser!

The third pillar is Likelihood, which refers to the calibration of inferences with probability. This is a very old idea, but it awaited the 20th century for a systematic treatment. Stigler illustrates this pillar, as with all others, with examples drawn from the past; the plinths of the pillars to stay with his metaphor. But his likelihood example is one of my favorites. In 1748 David Hume, himself a pillar of British empiricism, published the essay “Of Miracles.” As you might expect Hume believed that no credence should be given to reported miracles, since they were, by definition, a violation of natural laws and hence extremely improbable. He argued that a more likely explanation was that the reporter of the miracle was mistaken or had lied (Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), a contemporary of Hume, held similar beliefs about the existence of miracles. And he too was concerned about the response of the Church to such a view, so he hedged his bets. He concluded that, as a practical matter, miracles had no place in the modern world, but they were more frequent in the distant past. This was one of the rare times I know of when Kant waffled.). Hume’s courage was manifest when he examined probabilistically, the prime example of a miracle, the resurrection of Christ. His argument rested upon the relative likelihood of a reporter of the miracle being in error; an event that occurs with enormous relative frequency compared to a singular happening. He thus concluded the probability of a resurrection was vanishingly small. His analysis was challenged in a 1767 book by Richard Price (Four Dissertations), who was responsible for the 1763 posthumous presentation and publication of Thomas Bayes’ now famous essay “Towards solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances.” Price’s analysis (as described by Stigler) was the first use of Bayes’ theorem, and he used it to deduce that if in a million binomial trials (deaths) there had not been a single resurrection, the probability of a resurrection was not zero but was instead 1/1,600,000 – small, but not impossible. And thus the probability of a single resurrection occurring in the next million trials was:

1.0 – (1,599,999/1,600,000)^1,000,000 = .465

On which Stigler wryly comments, “the probability of a miracle was much larger than Hume had supposed.”

Stigler calls the fourth pillar “Intercomparison,” borrowed from Francis Galton. It refers to the arsenal of procedures based on statistical comparisons made, not to some external standard, but to something interior to themselves. An obvious example is analysis of variance in which we estimate the likelihood of an effect by comparing two different internal estimates of error.

Statistics fifth pillar is Regression, which is the inevitable outcome of a situation in which one variable is not perfectly predicted from another. In such a case the predicted outcome inexorably moves (regresses) toward the middle. Thus tall parents are likely to have tall children, but not as tall as they are. And, in parallel, short parents are likely to have short children, but not as short as they.

The sixth pillar is Design, as in design of experiments, and includes the powerful role played by randomization. The understanding of the importance of design, even in observational studies, grew and changed over time. Early on a (not very profound) design insight was that if you wanted to understand the effect that some treatment had on an outcome you needed to hold everything else constant and just vary that treatment. This (by now) obvious design is nevertheless often ignored so that after the “experiment” you are no better informed than you were beforehand. The idea of keeping everything else constant was sometimes difficult in practice – for example, agricultural experiments in which different seeds or different fertilizers were to be tested, they could not be tried out in the exactly the same location. Fisher resolved this. His genius was to turn a bug into a feature by carefully designing the experiment so that, on average, various factors of concern could be estimated simultaneously. Thus through careful design, multifactor experiments were born.

And finally, Stigler’s seventh pillar is Residual; a powerful idea for an analytic magnifying glass in which we subtract out the effects of obvious phenomena and look carefully at what is left over. In this way we can see what might previously had been obscured.

Stigler concludes, “The seven pillars are the principal support for statistical wisdom; they do not by themselves constitute wisdom.” He leaves room for another pillar to emerge, perhaps associated with the problems of big data. He reminds us that “every living science has its mysteries – Astronomy its dark energy and dark matter; Physics its strings and quantum theory;…Mathematics the Riemann Hypothesis. The existing seven pillars can support at least partial answers for even the most difficult cases. Statistics is a living science; the support of the seven is strong. … and with strong allies in other fields” we can be confident in having expectations of being equal to the challenges we will surely face.

This is a wonderful book that summarizes the wisdom accumulated over a lifetime. I am grateful to the Stigler for his having shared his experiences.

Great Introduction to the Arts
By Roz R
This is the textbook for an Arts class I teach for University of Phoenix. It's one of the better textbooks I've seen on the Arts. It covers painting, sculpture, literature, movies, theater, music, and dance. It's a great introduction to all of the Arts in a readable style with many photographs or illustrations of paintings, ballets, and plays. The book is expensive so I bought mine used, but it did not come with the music CD which is supposed to come with a new book. I recommend buying it new or checking with the seller of a used one to make sure it comes with the CD.

This book was easy to understand and organized well. Because I am generally not art inclined, I appreciate the simplicity. This book made learning the material for my class pretty easy.

About the Author
Gerard Manley Hopkins is one of English poetry's most brilliant stylistic innovators, and one of the most distinguished poets of any age. However, during his lifetime he was known not as a poet but as a Jesuit priest, and his faith was essential to his work. His writings combine an intense feeling for nature with an ecstatic awareness of its divine origins, most remarkably expressed in his magnificent and highly original 'sprung rhythm.'This collection contains not only all of Hopkins’ significant poetry, but also selections from his journals, sermons, and letters, all chosen for their spiritual guidance and insight. Hopkins didn't allow the publication of most of his poems during his lifetime, so his genius was not appreciated until after his death. Now, more than a hundred years later, his words are still a source of inspiration and sheer infectious joy in the radiance of God's creation.

Deep in Genuine, Devoted Faith and Rich Writing
By A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com
Hopkins is one of those poets hidden from so many because of his subject matter, yet is considered one of the most influential Victorian poets for his use of word combinations, meter and image.
Added to the delicious and poignant poetry is the contemplative nature of his prose and poetry. In it, you'll read about his humility and submission to God, his genuine faith, his desire that his poetry exalt God and not Hopkins himself.
Most his work was published posthumously, as late as 1920 or so, and immediately influenced the likes of T.S. Elliot (AKA, the guy who wrote the poem "Cats" is based on and "Wasteland") and his contemporaries.
While Whitman and Wilde were exalting in themselves, and just after Emerson and Thoreau were helping us see creation, Hopkins demonstrated prowess in pointing readers to see the Creator in the creation.
Atheists won't agree with him, of course, but he says it so well, they will at least go, "Hmm... if I believed, I could see that... yeah, wow, well put." The Catholics will cheer him on, "Atta boy... yep, that guy's a Jesuit!" Not undone are the Protestants who will be so impressed in agreement they'll be happy he was a Christian.
Check out this snippet from "Pied Beauty" "Glory be to God for dappled things--/For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;/For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;/Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches wings;/Landscape plotted and pieced--fold, fallow, and plough;/And 'all tra'des, their gear and tackle and trim." Those accents are in the original.
Delicious to say aloud? You should hear the second verse. His others are as tasty.
I fully recommend this book.

"The dearest freshness deep down things"
By Shalom Freedman
Hopkins did not create an enormous body of work, but what he did create was some of the most intensely powerful poetry English Literature has known. They are all here in this volume, poems such as " Thou art indeed, just" " Felix Randal, the Farrier",

" Carrion Comfort" " Binsey Populars" " God's Grandeur". Hopkins whose masterfully original descriptions of the natural world are second to none was one of the great innovators in the history of English verse. His development of the concept of 'sprung rhythm' return to the system of emphasizing the 'stresses' in verse is the key to this.

Hopkins tormented soul , his contention with his own despair are present in his most beautiful and moving poems.

A thoughtfully arranged collection.
By Guglielmucci
Gerard Manley Hopkins explores his intuition, doubts and counters it with theology, only to find himself in a place of despair at the end of the process. Yet, I cannot read a Hopkins poem without feeling a resonance within myself, as I recognize truth and beauty. He shouts at the heaven's, and embraces the questions that keep him up at night. Tensions often seem high, as with "Thou Art Indeed Just," or "Nondum." The man pours himself straight out into his verse.

Just as Hopkins wrestles with the nature of God, so must a reader wrestle with this verse. There are instances when the poetry will open itself easily to interpretation, but most often his wordplay produces poems that are dense, and so loaded with implicit imagery that untangling takes time which many are unwilling to give. The first time I happened upon "That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire," I was tempted to think Hopkins may have treated poetry more like an obsessive game with himself than a literary outlet. (If you've never read it, take a break to google it - you'll understand).

This collection, however, brings the works together into a wholly realistic format; they are not haphazardly assembled. It begins with some of his most well-known and treasured poems, like "The Caged Skylark" and "God's Grandeur." They are short and rich and accessible. These are then followed by a couple longer pieces. The poems continue in this sort of cycle - about six to ten easier poems followed by some more challenging works. It makes for a controlled flow, and prepares you for Hopkins' most ambitious poems, which are located at the end of the verse section.

On top of that, the cloth bound hard cover looks great with a sharp jacket to boot. This book is worth every penny! (Though I would suggest searching the used listings, as you can often find one in great condition for very cheap).

Masterpiece -- The Art and Science of Interviewing and Interrogation
By Howard Lebofsky
This book is the benchmark by which all other books on the art and science of interviewing and interrogation should be measured. It is truly a grand tour in every sense of the term. The text covers the greatest discoveries, techniques and practices in the field, and provides valuable insights by the authors, who are widely acknowledged experts and seasoned practitioners. The historical basis for truth-determining techniques is discussed at some length. However, the book really shines in its coverage of interviewing and interrogation theories and techniques developed over the past eighty years, paralleling the great advancements in law enforcement and psychology. The authors present a concise, insightful and balanced examination of the significant theories and theoreticians in the field, all the while drawing upon their substantial knowledge and expertise when evaluating and assessing the various theories and techniques discussed throughout the book. Their observations on interrogation ethics post 9-11 are thought-provoking.

Through words and illustrations the authors bring to life verbal and non-verbal truth/falsity indicators. The two subject areas that I found particularly interesting and useful were the Forensic Assessment Interview Technique ("FAINT") and the Morgan Thematic Apperception Testing Technique ("MITT"). Although these techniques are quite sophisticated, the authors' explanations and discussions are so clear and well-presented that virtually anyone will be able to understand and appreciate them.

Several reviews commented that the book is easy to read. While that is so, the simplicity and clarity of the text belie the considerable range and depth of thought and insight that went into this book. As such, I would advise readers to slowly digest the book, one paragraph at a time, if possible, and really give the text some thought. In doing so you will most likely gain a much better appreciation of the subject matter. As someone with an extensive law enforcement and legal background who thought he knew everything there was to know about interviewing, I can honestly say that this book really expanded my knowledge and appreciation of the subject.

The positive aspects of integrating interrogation techniques into clinical practice
By Kara Sandor Von Dresner
"Effective Interviewing & Interrogation Techniques" provides an informative overview of detecting and understanding deception. The chapter on the psycho-physiological basis of forensic assessment outlines freeze/hide and fight/flight responses, as well as, basic respondant and operant conditioning. Additionally, question formulation and verbal/non-verbal communication are addressed in an easily understood method.

Forensic clinicans and psychologists would all tremendously benefit from obtaining the knowledge provided. Although, we do not interrogate patients, the use of these techniques will provide emotionally-charged information not yet disclosed by the patient, which can then be effectively integrated into conceptualization and treatment. This book provides skills essential to those treating patients with antisocial personality disorder and/or comorbid psychopathy. The proposed interviewing and interrogation techniques provide methods of assessment much less invasive and time consuming than typical projective (e.g. Rorschach) and personality (e.g. MMPI) measures.

In Words Like Loaded Pistols, Sam Leith traces the art of persuasion, beginning in ancient Syracuse and taking us on detours as varied and fascinating as Elizabethan England, Milton’s Satanic realm, the Springfield of Abraham Lincoln and the Springfield of Homer Simpson. He explains how language has been used by the great heroes of rhetoric (such as Cicero and Martin Luther King Jr.), as well as some villains (like Adolf Hitler and Richard Nixon.) Words Like Loaded Pistols is a primer to rhetoric’s key techniques; you’ll find out how to build your own memory-palace; you’ll be introduced to the Three Musketeers: Ethos, Pathos and Logos; and you’ll learn how to use chiasmus with confidence and occultation without thinking about it. Most importantly of all, you will discover that rhetoric is useful, relevant – and absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

“Timed for a presidential election year, this sassy, smart book outlines and illustrates nearly every rhetorical trope and flourish related to the art of persuasion.... Leith can be fiendishly entertaining.”

Kirkus Reviews
“Leith brings to life a forgotten but eternally essential subject.... Leith uses every tool in the rhetorician’s arsenal to argue for rhetoric’s continuing relevance.... Readers will gain a great deal of insight into how humans use communication to get what they want...the book fulfills Cicero’s three objectives of rhetoric: ‘to move, educate, and delight.’”

The Guardian (UK)
“A highly entertaining and erudite whisk through the subject [of rhetoric].... It's not hard to agree that a little rhetorical knowledge is a wonderful thing, and Leith's work will indeed prove instructive as well as entertaining to those called on to speak in public.”

The London Evening Standard (UK)
“In this entertaining work of scholarship, Sam Leith revives the powerful discipline of classical rhetoric.... Leith is a gifted listener, and will not only tell you that ‘Friends, Romans, countrymen’ is a swelling tricolon but also which power ballad's opening bars it most resembles (AC/DC's Back in Black: ‘DUM! DUH-dum! DUH-dum-dum!’)”

The Observer (UK)
“Leith attempts to reclaim rhetoric with a breezy book that sprays around examples from history, politics and popular culture to outline the building blocks of public speech, flitting happily from Cicero to J-Lo, from Hitler to Homer Simpson.... Leith's often engaging examples lighten any sense of learning.”

The Financial Times (UK)
“It is through a welter of colloquial examples and eccentric line readings that the book really comes alive.... While the formal study of rhetoric might have collapsed under its own weight, Leith offers a slimmed-down version that is sure to enlighten.”

Telegraph (UK)
“This requires more than a cursory glance to appreciate its genius properly, but Leith’s great gift is the ability to plunder the everyday to illustrate the rarefied…He describes the development of rhetoric beautifully, and even after the most cursory dip into this, you begin to hear the world in a completely different, illuminated way.”

Metro (UK)
“Riveting.... Leith makes the classical techniques of rhetoric irresistibly accessible.”

Professionally Speaking (blog)
“A magnificently entertaining romp through the intricacies of classic rhetorical technique from Aristotle to Obama.... The genius of the book...is the irreverent and humorous range of examples he calls on to illustrate rhetoric in action.”

The Week (UK edition)
“Leith is good on tropes and registers and equally good at picking apart speeches — as his subtitle says, From Aristotle to Obama — to show us how they work.... [he] is good, too, on the structure of political speeches.”

Spectator (UK)
“Elegant, concise and frequently very funny.”

Independent (UK)
“Engrossing.... When it comes to Obama, Leith’s scrutiny is painstaking and he is especially illuminating on Obama’s debts to Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King.”

Plain Dealer
“This isn’t your parents’ rhetoric primer.... Irreverent and funny, Words Like Loaded Pistols is filled with tongue-in-cheek witticisms, slang and unexpected illustrations.... As political rhetoric builds toward November, Leith’s subject will be unavoidable. For the coming months, friends, Buckeyes, countrymen, ready your ears.”

The New Yorker
“Leith here folds classically structured lessons on discourse into a loose but entertaining history of great oratory.”

Wilson Quarterly
“[A] rambunctious handbook of rhetoric...funny, friendly pages.”

Sacramento/San Francisco Book Review
“[A] fascinating examination of the power of words.”

Zocalo Public Square
“Leith throws around obscure Greek words like a classics professor, but there are just enough Simpsons references and jokes to make this feel like worthy extracurricular reading.”

By Mr. Kenneth G. Davies
Enjoyable, informative and useful. Sam Leith neatly expounds over two millennia of writing (as the subtitle says, from Aristotle to Obama) on rhetoric, the subject that should not have been dropped from the syllabus. He cites examples from both sides of the Atlantic -- helpful for insular Americans or Britons. His acerbic wit, coupled with a fondness for vulgarity, help make the book "accessible" for those who fear serious writing. This can be irritating, but I did find myself guffawing out loud once or twice. This is really a review of the literature, but it is more than just a quick romp in the outskirts of the subject. If you want to explore further, Leith recommends a handful of essential reference works, which is most useful to a newcomer like myself.

The best introduction to rhetoric that I have ever read
By Kindle Customer
The author provides a succinct and very readable introduction to one of the most important subjects of society, that of persuasion through classical rhetoric. He begins with a brief though enlightening history of the origins and development rhetoric, then proceeds to describe the types and elements illustrated by some of the greatest orators in history. The book is excellent for the beginner yet informative for the accomplished. It is enlightening, enjoyable and well worth the price.

Excellent work on the topic of rhetoric
By SJS of MD
If the true meaning of the word "rhetoric" is to be liberated from the pejorative prison in which it has been locked for a few generations, this book might just do it. With wit, humor, and superb examples, the author demonstrates how the concept of rhetoric is instrinsic to the very essence of language itself. I can't recommend this book highly enough to all who love language and its myriad expressions.
