Experiment!: Planning, Implementing and Interpreting, by Oivind Andersson

Experiments are the most effective way to learn about the world. By cleverly interfering with something to see how it reacts we are able to find out how it works. In contrast to passive observation, experimenting provides us with data relevant to our research and thus less time and effort is spent separating relevant from irrelevant information.

The art of experimentation is often learnt by doing, so an intuitive understanding of the experimental method usually evolves gradually through years of trial and error. This book speeds up the journey for the reader to becoming a proficient experimenter.

Organized in two parts, this unique text begins by providing a general introduction to the scientific approach to experimentation.  It then describes the processes and tools required, including the relevant statistical and experimental methods.   Towards the end of the book a methodology is presented, which leads the reader through the three phases of an experiment: ‘Planning’, ‘Data Collection’, and ‘Analysis and Synthesis’.

 Experiment!

  • Provides an excellent introduction to the methodology and implementation of experimentation in the natural, engineering and medical sciences
  • Puts practical tools into scientific context
  • Features a number of selected actual experiments to explore what are the key characteristics of good experiments
  • Includes examples and exercises in every chapter

This book focuses on general research skills, such as adopting a scientific mindset, learning how to plan meaningful experiments and understanding the fundamentals of collecting and interpreting data. It is directed to anyone engaged in experiments, especially Ph.D. and masters students just starting to create and develop their own experiments.

Review

"This description of the history of the scientific method and the struggle to establish a stable experimental method and framework firmly sets the foundations for the beginning of the book – Understanding the world – and is so rich in content that it could easily form a great book all by itself."  (Chemistry World, 1 June 2013)

“Provides an excellent introduction to the methodology and implementation of experimentation in the natural, engineering and medical sciences.”  (Chemistry Views, 20 July 2012)

“I highly recommend the very practical and research skills focused book Experiment!: Planning, Implementing and Interpreting by Oivind Andersson to students from the undergraduate to the doctoral levels, instructors and educators in sciences, practitioners of science in industry and government, and anyone interested in how science works through the scientific method and experimentation. This book is an indispensable guide to planning, designing, conducting, data collecting, and analyzing and synthesizing the results.”  (Blog Business World, 21 October 2012)

Wish this had been around for my doctoral studies!
By AmazonJavaJunki
While it might not seem like the most exciting topic, I absolutely loved this book! In fact, I wish something like this had been around when during my doctoral study days...but, don't let that fool you! This book is NOT limited to doctoral studies nor even grad students in general. It provides the most reader-friendly overview of various forms of research I've ever encountered. It's engaging, easy to read, clear and provides abundant interesting and informative examples.

Frankly, it should be required reading starting with undergrads...and absolutely required for anyone interested in pursuing a graduate degree. It does a fantastic job with the "big picture" and allows the reader to gain a greater understanding of what type of research fits where, what to use when and what types of questions can be answered using which type of alternatives. An overview of introductory statistics is included as is history of research, data collection etc...

Absolutely stellar! Unlike other books that I've picked up which claim to provide an introduction to research or stats (but are so rudimentary as to insult the intelligence of the reader), this one delivers. It provides pertinent information in a user friendly manner. From experience, every single topic in this book was something I actually encountered in college...albeit certainly NOT in this reader-friendly and engaging delivery.

Should be required reading for those in science. Useful for very bright high school on up...
By Two kids mom
Although this book would be overkill for most science fair projects, the material in it would be useful for those participating in higher level (such as Intel ISEF) science fairs. I have judged these fairs in the past (if you ever get a chance to do this, jump on it, you will be stunned by these kids and come out with a big smile on your face) and often they have absolutely spectacular ideas, but where they have difficulty is in interpreting the results. Those who can, and do master the details are more likely to win. All of them have big, world changing insights in science , but the "analysis and synthesis" is sometimes lacking. They may apply statistics, but not always correctly, and in a rather haphazard fashion. This book would provide some guidelines for them. Again, I would suggest this only for very high level high school students, you do not need this book to make a volcano out of vinegar and baking soda.

In a world where many journalists consistently confuse causation with correlation, completely misunderstand sample size and scare the wits out of people by using bad statistics I wish this could be required reading. I would also like those in charge of education to read this book, as it would cut down enormously on wasted money and effort based on poorly designed and executed studies. Well... we all can dream.

This is an excellent book for those in all of the sciences, both soft and hard. It effectively and practically outlines the scientific method, providing useful advice and, very importantly, teaching you to think about posing a question you can actually ANSWER with science. I am very impressed with the clarity of the writing and the methodical way setting up, conducting and analyzing experiments is addressed. Some topics were covered so well (central limit effect and confidence intervals) that they gave me insight into better ways to present those topics to my own students.

Who this book is for:
Undergraduate and graduate students in any of the sciences.
Very high level high school students who are interested in real experimentation.
Fairly high level science readers (or determined ones) who want more information on how to judge the quality of a scientific experiment.

By the way, it is shorter than I expected at 288 pages and is also a paperback. If you google the book and find it on Wiley (the publisher ) a list of the table of contents is provided.

Useful for non-Ph.D. students?
By J. Green
I did not realize when I ordered this book that it is a textbook for Ph.D. students, however the topic appealed to me and I hope to be able to use what it teaches. I am not trained in any scientific disciplines but my hobbies have often mingled people of scientific and non-scientific backgrounds - specifically, growing carnivorous plants and saltwater reef-keeping (yes, unusual hobbies; I know). In both hobbies it is not uncommon to see hobbyists offering advice on online forums to others, saying they did x or y to their plants or aquarium and got z result. Unfortunately, where there has not been a lot of scientifically-based research, this good-intentioned but sometimes flawed advice is what frequently passes as "Truth."

This book describes how to apply scientific principles of experimentation to situations to improve the information learned. In spite of my non-scientific (business) background I found it easily readable (if a bit long-winded sometimes). The sections on using statistics are probably beyond my needs (especially since it's been a LONG time since I took statistics) but I appreciated the sections on designing experiments and measuring and interpreting data. Overall, it's more broad-based and technical than I needed (especially since my efforts - when I finally get around to them - will be mostly for personal edification) but it's still some useful principles to keep in mind, even for a simple hobbyist.
