Very good book for administering vSphere environments.
By Graeme Vermeulen
This is a very good book to prepare with for the VCAP5-DCA. Note that if you buy a printed copy of the book you'll likely receive an "older" copy that has no reference to the vSphere Web Client. There are a number of exercises in the eBook version that aren't present in older copies of the printed version (for example, configuring Flash Read Cache in appendix C - this can only be done via the Web Client). So just be aware of this before ordering your copy.
Although the digital versions of the book will include more of the Web Client, there are still no examples on how to complete tasks with it. It's no secret that to truly master this exam, you should be able to complete commands via the Web Client, Thick Client and CLI. To go one step further, try and use vCenter Orchestrator instead!
The book does a good job of touching on key subjects required to pass the exam, but if you want to dive deeper you'll need to use other materials. This book will provide enough information to confidently take the exam, however does not go into granular detail.
Who will benefit from this book?
Well, takers of the VCAP5-DCA exam and potentially takers of the VCAP6-Deployment exam as a lot of the topics and exercises will still be relevant. Also, VMware admins will benefit hugely from this book. Even though I've passed the exam, I tend to keep my copy close.
Takers of the VCAP5-DCD exam will also benefit, as being successful in that exam requires a deep knowledge of vSphere and VMware products in general (DCV track obviously).
Part of being a VMware admin is knowing how to automate time-consuming tasks. The book does touch on useful PowerCLI commands as part of completing tasks, however you'll need to try and find good examples scripts to break and fix elsewhere. It's obviously not recommended doing this in your production environment!
The main reason I bought this book was for the practice exercises contained within. They certainly helped to hone my knowledge in the days leading to the exam.
I'm not saying that you'll certainly pass the exam if you ONLY use this book, but you should definitely make it part of your arsenal in tackling the DCA, and in fact the DCD too.

It is listed as for the VDCA510 and VDCA550 tests but it really only covers the 510 test content unless you go download additional content. There are also multiple questions that have incorrect answers so double check your work if you are depending on the answers in this book!

Data Center Exam Preparation Guide
By Bob Monroe
Before you go and buy this book I want you to do a simple exercise first. Go to any mirror in your area and look into that reflection. Take a look at your eyes. Not just the eye pupils but what is behind those eyes. I would like you to peer deep into your own image. Do you see yourself as one who would be dedicated enough to take on a completely different type of technical challenge or are you simply interested in obtaining another certification?
Only you will know because you will read and be told all sorts of opinions people have about yourself. It is easy to sit in an office chair wishing or wondering what it might be like in another career field. Managing a data center may sound easy based on what you have heard but think about it in the context of your background. If you look beyond the black portion of your eye you will see your own impression of what you are capable of achieving in life. Not everyone can be a professional wrestler or a concert violinist.
The VMware Certified Advanced Professional 5 – Data Center Administration is nothing like anything you have seen before unless you have several years of technical experience under your hood. The mind behind those eyes looking back at you in the mirror will tell you if you should go after this monster task.
First off, the book makes no pretense that you are embarking on a difficult task. You are expected to have a very good understanding of basic vSphere commands and operations. Mr. Baca and Mr. Davis do cover some of the fundamental portions of vSphere but most of that is accidental to the method they are teaching you. You must have your hands on a VMServer with VM clients because the entire book is based on hands-on lab situations. To set yourself up ahead of time, grab a copy of VMware (or vPlayer) and install it on your own machine at home. You can make up a bunch of vms but the important point is to read along the book and install the important tools as they are discussed in the book.
The first bite is much worse than the bark. The authors open up your exam prep by digging into the CLI with ESXCLI, vCLI, vMA and PowerCLI. Yes, that means lots of commands you will need to master. If you have a background in Unix or Linux Bash or even old DOS, you'll find these commands are very familiar but different. Each tool, whether ESXCLI or PowerCLI has it's own rules and limitations. Think of these interfaces as a collection of kitchen knives: you will use one CLI to slice bread and another CLI to carver up ribs. Don't mix the tools up even if they can do the same task because you will find yourself with more work later on. The authors make sure this message is loud and clear to the reader.
I was frustrated at the small size images. I am one of those people who wants to see what was typed in to get the results shown in the screen-shot. Another sour point I have is the lack of a cheatsheet for common commands. I'm lazy like that and I want to have a simple sheet with common tasks and switches at my disposal. Many of the switches are the real power behind the command but that isn't telling you much if you have worked with command lines before. Another problem I have is that some of the commands with switches, routing addresses, locations and so forth are really long typing exercises. If you miss one letter, number or symbol, the whole command gets rejected. Whatever happened to F3?
Back to the book.
Since the exam is based on scenarios, the book is written to cover as many different situations you might come across in the exam. It just so happens that many of these scenarios are real-life tasks such as migrating one SANS to another or setting up performance gathering tools. Many of these tasks are covered in a step-by-step fashion, which is great if this is your first time doing that task. The authors do go into detail as to the reasons why they picked this step instead of this step. In fact the authors go into great detail about many of the higher functions of data center operations. Almost too much detail. Do I really care about CPU usage off a single client when I should be looking at CPU averages across multiple servers? That's your call and your time to spend.
Attributes are a killer for me. Like switches, they add power to a command but are usually longer to type out. A switch can be a simple “-C”, while and attribute might look like “pktsInDropped”. That is not the books problem but it is important that the reader understand the capabilities of adding a switch to a command versus adding an attribute. Those can fill your brain if you intent on memorizing them for the exam. Your best bet is to use what you already know and try to organize all this information based on their name and function.
The authors point out numerous situations where incompatibility exists between older software and newer technology, as well as our own bias towards not fully trusting virtualization software. Older versions of ESXi on servers must be completely removed if your organization stepped up one version at a time to ESXi5. The problem lay with ESXi3 and the Windows 64 architecture. The book recommends and shows the reader how to perform a clean install as well as a method for patching this incompatibility using Windows Server 8 R3. Legacy software and hardware will always be something that the administrators needs to keep keep an eye on. This is where end of life cycle management come in but it outside the scope of the book and this review.
Steve Baca and John Davis cover a great deal of territory to prepare the reader for the VCAP5-DCA. Some of the VMware veterans may find it time consuming to follow the book step by step-by-step for tasks that they already know so well. The devil is in the details. If you pay close attention to the steps in the book, there are short cuts that will save you time later on. These short cuts are explained in most cases but it is also interesting to see how someone else does a particular task. You are never too old to learn something new.
So if your eye tells you that you need to obtain this certification and you have the will power to follow through, buy this book and read it. Make sure your highlighter is close by since there are plenty of great tips evenly spread across the pages.
