This entry in Molay’s Paris Homicide series won France’s prestigious crime-fiction award, the Prix du Quai des Orfèvres. Its hero is Nico Sirsky, head of the Paris Criminal Investigation Division, known as “La Brigade Criminelle,” or “La Crim’.” Sirsky is an endearing mixture of tortured, hardheaded cop and romantic; he falls instantly in love with an internist he visits for a suspected ulcer, valiantly flirting throughout his examination. Sirsky, the forensics team, and a seemingly ever-present criminal profiler confront the grisly murder of a young, pregnant assistant history professor at the Sorbonne, killed in her home during the day. This is followed by more murders of thirtysomething, upscale women, all of whom opened their doors to the killer, who has an agenda: he left a note at one of the early crime scenes, announcing his intention to kill seven women in seven days. He also tightens the noose around Sirsky’s neck, threatening and stalking those closest to him. Molay uses meticulous police procedure and forensics to bolster gripping scenes of terror. Let’s hope more installments from this series cross the ocean soon. --Connie Fletcher
Review
Reviews: "Author Fredrique Molay does a superb job of building the suspense in overt and subtle ways; don't pick this book up unless you're planning to read for a while because, I assure you, you won't be able to put it down. - CriminalElement.com: Fresh Meat "...a slick, highly realistic, and impeccably crafted thriller. Likeable characters, outstanding pacing, and unexpected plot twists that keep readers guessing throughout…an extraordinary, hard-hitting novel. ForeWord Reviews "Author Frederique Molay writes very well, and occasionally there is a touch of horror and a layer of suspense throughout; the plot manages to take you to interesting places. And overall, it was an enjoyable book to read. I commend Anne Trager's translation of the book; it was really quite well-done, and the editing and formatting for the [e-book] was also well done." - Above the Law: At the Scene of the Crime Praise for Frederique Molay: "Molay uses meticulous police procedure and forensics to bolster gripping scenes of terror. Let’s hope more installments from this series cross the ocean soon." - Booklist "Frederique Molay is the French Michael Connelly. - Jean Miot, journalist, former editorial director for the French daily Le Figaro and former president of Agence France Press "The 7th Woman is a taut and terror-filled thriller. Frederique Molay navigates French police procedure with a deft touch, creating a lightning-quick, sinister plot with twists and turns that kept me reading late and guessing to the very end. Inspector Nico Sirsky is every bit as engaging and dogged as Arkady Renko in Gorky Park and is sure to become a favorite with readers in the United States and around the world." - New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni "The 7th Woman blends suspense and authentic police procedure with a parallel tale of redemption. Well-drawn characters and ratcheting tension won't let you put the book down. I read this in one sitting." - Paris mystery writer Cara Black "It is a handsomely written and wonderfully translated Parisian police procedural that also will prowl your mind. The ugly parts are appalling, but Molay has the prowess to touch lightly upon them before exploring the horror seeping into the hardened police ranks." - Durango Herald "A remarkable plot that races forward and focuses on likeable characters. An unequivocal success. - Action Francaise "It's really an excellent book. It's the kind of suspense that makes you miss your subway stop or make you turn off you phone once you've started it, and we are hoping that Frederique Molay writes many more like it. - RTL "An excellent crime novel that you read in one sitting. - L'Express/Lire "Skillful suspense." - Lire "You barely have time to catch your breath between turning the pages of this spine-tingling novel." - Cine Tele Revue

The 7th Woman
By Cphe
I don't give many books 5 stars unless they are exceptional to me. This book is well worth the rating. It is the best mystery/police procedural I have read in quite some time.
Nico Sirsky is head of the Paris Criminal Investigative Unit. He is young for the post but is exceptionally brilliant for the job. There are a series of deadly and gruesome murders that take place in Paris and Nico is taunted relentlessly by the perpetrator. Nico and his team have to race against the clock to find a killer that leaves very little clue for the team to go on. The killer is targeting women closer and closer to Nico and appears to have a lot of inside information.
The series of murders are presented graphically by the author and the writing and story is presented in a tautly, intricate manner. The use of forensics (think C.S.I) is well written and believable. There are many red herrings in this story which added to the complexity of the story.
If you enjoy police procedural/mystery stories then this book is well worth a look at. I found it time and money well spent.

Another great read from Le French Book
By Bellaire11
One of the great things about reading mysteries and thrillers that take place outside of the USA and are written by local authors is that they often give the reader not only a great read but also teach us about another culture or justice system. We have always had a number of Italian authors in this category. We have not had nearly as many French authors, although the prolific Belgian author Georges Simenon certainly contributed significantly to the genre. Into this breach Le French Book, a small publisher intent on bringing out successful French mysteries and thrillers in translation in e book form, is a welcome addition. To date they have released 3 books. All of them excellent and all of them different. For those interested - the others are Treachery in Bordeaux - which is a nice "cozy" mystery that also informs us quite a bit about the wine industry, and The Paris Lawyer, a great story about a young woman lawyer who takes on a case in the French countryside which evoques in her memory past events of signifiant importance.
In this book we are treated to a classical police procedural. The story is gripping (a gripping story is one that I stay up too late reading), a bit gory - as others have mentioned - and educational as to the workings of the Paris police. Like most good detective stories false leads and possible suspects abound. Patience and good police work win out, but at a significant cost.
Although translated from the French, all three of the books are highly readable. I hope that we will see more like these in the near future.

A fast page turner

My first read about Nico Sirsky and the French Police. A little far fetched plot is made readable by good writing (although) translated), but it kept me enthralled and turning pages faster then normal. Molay gives the reader Paris, its people and its police in a new light. I want more from Molay.
