Donalyn Miller says she has yet to meet a child she couldn't turn into a reader. No matter how far behind Miller's students might be when they reach her 6th grade classroom, they end up reading an average of 40 to 50 books a year. Miller's unconventional approach dispenses with drills and worksheets that make reading a chore. Instead, she helps students navigate the world of literature and gives them time to read books they pick out themselves. Her love of books and teaching is both infectious and inspiring. The book includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" that helps parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read.

Because she couldn’t find a book that showed her how to use her own love of books to imbue her elementary students with the same love, Miller, Teacher Magazine blogger, decided to write her own. She recalls her personal journey as a teacher and the surprise and disappointment of learning that book loving cannot be automatically passed on to students. No more having the whole class read the same novel. She gave her students questionnaires to determine their interests and personally selected stacks of books of possible interest to them, then allowed them to read independently—at least 40 books a school year. She recounts the experience of some students struggling and others exhilarated by the freedom to read. Miller’s tactics resulted in improvement in her students’ vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. She also saw students respect book suggestions that came from a reader’s passion rather than a teacher’s agenda. Miller includes reading lists, activities, questionnaires, and other resources. Although aimed at teachers, this book will also definitely appeal to parents interested in encouraging their children to read. --Vanessa Bush
Review
[Starred review] Miller, a sixth-grade language arts and social studies teacher and blogger, has enabled students of many different backgrounds to enjoy reading and to be good at it; her students regularly score high on the Texas standardized tests. Her approach is simple yet provocative: affirm the reader in every student, allow students to choose their own books, carve out extra reading time, model authentic reading behaviors, discard timeworn reading assignments such as book reports and comprehension worksheets, and develop a classroom library filled with high-interest books. Her students regularly read more than 40 books in a school year and leave her classroom with an appreciation and love of books and reading. Miller provides many tips for teachers and parents and includes a useful list of ultimate reading suggestions picked by her students. This outstanding contribution to the literature is highly recommended for teachers, parents, and others serving young students.—Mark Bay, Univ. of the Cumberlands Lib., Williamsburg, KY (Library Journal, March 15, 2009)

". . . a primer of the heart on how to make reading magical again."
—Carol Ann Tomlinson
Donalyn Miller is a dedicated teacher who says she has yet to meet a child she couldn't turn into a reader. In The Book Whisperer, Miller takes us inside her 6th grade classroom to reveal the secrets of her powerful but unusual instructional approach. Rejecting book reports, comprehension worksheets, and other aspects of conventional instruction, Miller embraces giving students an individual choice in what they read combined with a program for independent reading. She also focuses on building a classroom library of high-interest books, and above all on modeling appropriate and authentic reading behaviors. Her zeal for reading is infectious and inspiring, and the results speak for themselves. No matter how far behind Miller's students may be when they start out, they end up reading an average of 40 books per year, achieve high scores on standardized tests, and internalize a love for reading that lasts long after they've left her class.
Travel alongside the author as she leads her students to discover the ample rewards of reading and literature. Brought to life with Miller's passionate voice, The Book Whisperer will help teachers support students of all levels on their path to reading success. It also includes an invaluable list of books that Miller's students most enjoy reading.
"Miller's new book, The Book Whisperer, is a breath of fresh air. Powerful and practical, this book will support you as you change your classroom for the better while helping you to understand how to overcome current classroom cultures where some children learn and many learn to hate reading."
—Richard L. Allington, Ph.D., University of Tennessee
"In The Book Whisperer, Donalyn Miller deftly describes the inherent need children have to engage with books, intellectually and emotionally. The book is a timely and rare gift for teachers."
—Ellin Oliver Keene, author and consultant
"This book reminds anyone—who is lucky enough to have loved a book—what classrooms and kids have lost in our frenzy to 'cover' content and standardize student performance in the name of reading. This is a primer of the heart on how to make reading magical again."
—Carol Ann Tomlinson, William Clay Parish, Jr. Professor of Education, University of Virginia

It's a fine book. It has affirmed what I have always ...
By Anne Smith
It's a fine book. It has affirmed what I have always done in the classroom with my fourth and fifth graders; however, if Donalyn Miller, or her editors are reading this, I would suggest these things:
1. The self congratulatory tone gets old about half way through.
2. I am halfway through, but I have yet to see practical advice on HOW to implement what she does. For example, she writes about writing in the student journals...I'd like to know HOW she has the time to do this. I have given this my best effort, but the truth is that unless you have nothing else to do, such as writing learning plans, grading papers, etc, these responses take a while, and can take up a ton of time.
3. She has not stated what she is doing while the kids are reading independently. I run reading groups, and typically have 4 or 5 groups, based on reading level. If the kids are not reading a novel in group, what are they doing? I can say that skill practice is AWFUL when not connected to something they are reading.
4. I would like suggestions for younger kids. She teaches 6th grade. The level of response in a 3rd or 4th grader is very different from a 6th grader, particularly when they love reading, but have challenges like paying attention or high distractability.
For teachers who have not done what she has, I suggest getting the Fountas and Pinnell books on Guided Reading. Much of what she describes is outlined in their books.

Life Changing
By Lyn
This book gives such a great view of what reading really is compared to how schools are teaching it. This book gives me hope for public schools and it has given me life changing advice in regards to myself as a "dormant" reader and in regards to homeschooling my own two children.
I thought this book was well written and easy to follow. The personal accounts give you a great visual to go along with the author's words. The quotes from famous people as well as students are inspiring and refreshing.
I read this book on the Kindle Fire and the text was very well formatted and easy to follow.
I will probably buy a physical copy of this book to keep on hand and reread when my kids are older. I would recommended this book to anyone with kids or in a teacher/mentor position.

This Book Has Changed My Teaching More Than Any Other Book. For Real.
By Amazon Customer
This book has changed my teaching more than any book I have ever read. I'm a veteran HS English teacher (with almost 20 years in the classroom), and for years, my students have been telling me that they loved reading in elementary school but that in middle school in HS, their English teachers have committed "Readicide" (which is another great book, by the way!). So, the very people who entered the profession to promote a love of literacy are the ones who are killing these students' love of reading. Gulp. They are worksheeted to death, spend 4 weeks beating one book into the ground, and do what Miller calls "literary arts and crafts" instead of discussing great literature. This book had more takeaways for my teaching than any other book, and believe me: I went into it thinking that a 6th grade reading teacher wouldn't have a thing for this busy high school teacher that has to follow a set curriculum and hit all of the standards. Thankfully, I couldn't have been more wrong. My SMART goal this year is to help my students fall back in love with reading (because they all loved going to the library every week and getting new books--even the struggling, reluctant readers that I have now in HS). The biggest change is that I now have my students read for the first 10 minutes of every class. They say they look forward to coming to class, because they get to either read what I've assigned for that week or read a book they've been dying to tear into but always had to put off until summer. I have Miller's follow-up book on its way (which is reviewed as being fabulous but just not as fabulous as this one). I can't say enough about this book!
