About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics.  A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals.  He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac.  He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and holder of the Richard W. and Janis H. Furst Endowed Chair in Finance at the University of Kentucky. He has a longstanding interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. 

Randolph W.Westerfield is Dean Emeritus of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and is the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and a member of the finance faculty for 20 years.

I'm sorry...

Pray, pray, pray that your professor doesn't select this book. My main issue is that each chapter has a series of problems to test you on the concepts found in that chapter. However, the book only provides you with a few answers to these problems. For example, in my current chapter, there are 38 end of chapter problems. Answers to only 6 of them are provided in the answer key. Spend 40 minutes working out the answer to problem 15? Great, you have NO idea whether you got it right because it's not one of the 6 answers provided. I have spent a lot of time dealing with McGraw-Hill on whether a solutions key actually exists and even they're not sure.

Also, be forewarned if your professor is using Connect for this textbook because it will be a waste of your money to buy it used or rent as you'll need to purchase a seperate access key to Connect and you get the text in e form with the Connect key. Don't pay for it twice like I had to.

Not A Good Textbook - Find Another Better One

Not my kinda textbook. In talking to my instructor, it seems that this book is the gold standard for intro finance texts, and if that's the case, it's too bad. I didn't feel I learned much from it. Almost zero worked problems within the chapters, yet they toss you into the deep end at the end of the chapter with the problem sets.
Personally, I learn a lot by studying and working through examples and seeing worked-problem solutions. They provide some example problems
here and there but they're usually on the order of "you should check our answers for practice." Well, what if your answers are wrong?! I should add, the supplemental materials of the text are not very helpful (powerpoint slides/lecture outlines.) Just read the text, work whatever assigned problems your instructor gives you, and hope for the best on the tests. Thankfully our professor just gave multiple choice open-book tests so everyone got an A or B on every test.

It is a pretty basic text. The authors explain things ok usually, but their writing style is borderline archaic and they often take the long route in explaining important concepts. Their discussion of bond pricing and TVM (time value of money) needs improvement. So does their discussion of present value of dividends, in which they take a very loopy numerical approach that is far too hard to understand - I got most of the test questions wrong on this topic. They also refer to Sarbanes-Oxley as "Sarbox" - nobody else calls it anything except SOX. I took Intermediate Accounting before I took Finance, and we used the Kieso, et al. textbook, which was pretty darned difficult but better than this text as far as explanations of TVM and other topics.

I am alarmed to see that a new copy of this book sold for over $200. It has over 20 chapters but they are all short and the information within this book is definitely not worth such a high pricetag. Actually, I rented this book for the course because the cost was far more than I was willing to pay.

save the money and download the 9th or 10th editions for free. All books are identical with different end of chapter problems. Plus, you can also find answer keys for the earlier editions.

Superb Guide to the Male Chastity Lifestyle

Excellent book on the male chastity lifestyle from the female Keyholder's point of view. Georgia has many great suggestions for tease and denial techniques and how male chastity can be incorporated into a variety of other power shift activities. She also has great advice for new Keyholders just being introduced to the idea of male chastity and is always right on the money in describing what men think and what they really want from this. In fact, her insights into the male psyche are uncanny in their accuracy. One thing that many women new to the subject can't quite get their head wrapped around is why men would want to do this. Georgia answers that question in great detail. The last section of the book is a checklist for new Keyholders that provides an excellent, concise summary of issues that both parties should resolve before undertaking the lifestyle. For those new Keyholders, I would recommend reading the checklist first, then the book and then the checklist again. If you buy only one book on male chastity, this should be the one.

Reprint of 1922 edition ... but will suite the needs of most intermediate students

This edition of Cicero's De Senectute will probably suite the needs of most intermediate students (whether undergraduates or those studying on their own). It offers help with most of the difficult grammatical constructions, and has a pretty good (though not great) vocabulary at the end. Students who have only used commentaries published in the past twenty years or so (such as Steven Cerutti's pro Archia) will surely find far less help with the grammar and syntax than they are used to. Essentially only really difficult or unusual constructions are addresses. Also, the notes *never* give lexical help, no matter how unusual the word (on the assumption that the student can look it up in the glossary). The many references in the text to middle Republican figures are all glossed (though annoyingly only on the first mention and thereafter references with "see p...).

You may want to be aware that Bennett was from a generation of scholars who did not look upon Cicero so favorably (to paraphrase a contemporary of his, Cicero was an unprincipled opportunist, a mere rhetorician, and a shabby journalist!). As such Bennett takes every opportunity to point out the flaws or inconsistencies in Cicero's prose, and almost never points out the (many) instances where his prose is carefully constructed, harmonious, and balanced. This can get wearisome after the first dozen or so times!

All this said, this commentary should suit the needs of most students. Don't expect an abundance of help, but it should be enough to get you through. Since this is an offprint of a 1922 book (New Cicero by Charles Bennett) there are many inexpensive used editions available as well.

The book was needed for a Latin course at the University of Iowa. It came in good condition right before classes started. The professor chose a good piece of material, that both taught essential concepts of the language as well as provided good historical context too.

A good book for fundamentals-and attitude.

I was prepared to be disappointed-but was pleasantly surprised. I have studied the sword for years, and yet learned something from this book. For a beginner, too, its clear, concise explanations, coupled with well thought out photographs, will prove an excellent study guide or workbook. There are minor deficiencies, occasionally, but they will provide the student an incentive to put down the book and physically explore what Lowry is trying to demonstrate.

There are few like Musashi, who need little personal instruction. This book is not a substitute for a good teacher, but an excellent adjunct to one. The Way is not a set of rules. It is only the Way.

A good introduction...

As an Aikido student I was looking for a reference guide for katas and exercises so that I could practise outside the dojo. This book does not provide complex single katas ( it only has two very basic ones )so I was disappointed in that respect, however I did find the various introductory articles very educational and certianly relevant to any martial art whether you are trainig with a sword, a staff, or are doing empty handed techniques. My advice is: buy the book ad keep in mind Mr. Lowry's advice at all times but don't expect a visual feast of amazing pictures ( they are just plain black and white ). If you take this book as an introduction you will like it and hopefully it will push you to train harder and find out more about Japanese swordsmanship.

This is largely the history of the Lincoln Highway itself, its promoters, and its transportation context. The New York to San Francisco high way dates primitively from 1913, finally became an improved highway in the early 1930s, and ultimately declined as U.S. 50 and especially I-80 more effectively overtook its function. In addition to too much detail about the Lincoln Highway Association, there are many asides on transportation and communication in general, the auto and tire business, etc. This is not an exciting trip for those already aware of these well-traveled subjects. Book well done.

Very well detailed history lesson. The Lincoln highway is coast to coast, San Francisco to New York and I am planning on taking this route and route 66 to and from Sacramento on one round trip. The author obviously spent a great deal of time on the details and made the trip himself. It was published in 1988 and all photo's are in black and white some dating back to 1915.
The only issue I had, was I bought it used through an Amazon third party and I feel my book was maybe mis classified as far as condition by the bookseller. It had a page or two ripped out and was a library book. Bookseller had very good ratings so possibly this just slipped by. Since I am just using it for my own research I will keep it. You get what you pay for, usually and in this case I did. If it was a gift for someone I would have bought new.

The Romanticism of Travel

I'm a history junkie and I admit it. And this book feeds my habit superbly. Drake Hokanson has done an excellent job of documenting the birth of the concept of a national road across the United States. It was the dawn of the motor age and the car makers realized that the future of their business depended on more than just regional travel. The visionaries of the Lincoln Highway saw their concept as unifying the continent, much as the transcontinental railroad had done 50 years before. The job of selling an idea, the politics of route locations, the romanticism and danger involved in striking out across no man's land to "see the country" and the techniques of keeping people motivated are all part of a well-woven story. His narrative mastery in describing what it felt like when he camped out where others had camped in the past had me feeling like I was right there with him. I love it when writing pulls me into the flow. In addition, Hokanson includes some beautiful archival photos from the University of Michigan as well as some he himself shot during research trips for the book. I wound up a little sad when I got to the last chapter because it was soon to be over. I think that's the mark of a good writer.

A fascinating history of the first transcontinental highway.

American children grow up learning about the first transcontinental railroad and the Pony Express, and rightly so given their role in binding the adolescent United States together. Few, however, learn about the nation's first transcontinental highway, the Lincoln, or Pacific, Highway. This was the road that launched automotive travel as adventure, in a nation that would link its lifestyle to the automobile. The irony is that while we all learn about the Pony Express and Transcontinental Railroad, neither is much more than legend to us today. Yuri and Katrin Shumakov - a stellar artist-duo, professional origami creators, who started their origami journey in France in 1989 and since then they unfold this art in a heretofore unseen way! They have created amazing paper world ORILAND with incredible fantasy Kingdoms that impress with rich detail of majestic castles, abundance of paper flora and busy life of little paper dwellers. Their newest kingdoms Toy-ronto and Albuquerque combine fantasy and reality together, presenting a whimsical artistic rendition of iconic sights of these cities. Another beautiful and elegant aspect of origami they brought to life is ORIBANA - a marriage of two Japanese arts: Origami and Ikebana. By combining these remarkable art-forms, in early 1990s Katrin and Yuri began to create paper flower arrangements in paper vases and thought up a distinctive name for it - Oribana. Since then they designed more than 50 charming oribana-compositions with a broad variety of origami flowers and vases. Being prolific origami authors they created more than a thousand of origami designs from simple forms and cute characters to complex dinosaurs' skeletons and architecture that all have a distinctive Oriland style. Psychologists by education, Katrin and Yuri have studied how origami helps children learn. Their Ph.D scientific work shows that by doing origami, children develop better use of both hands and that origami can improve creativity and intelligence in children ages 7 to 11. They believe that origami is "entertainment for the soul, gymnastics for the mind, and training for the hands." In 1999, Yuri and Katrin received the Silver Award in the ThinkQuest International Competition for their 'Travel to Oriland' website and it brought them and their team to Universal Studios Hollywood for the Award Ceremony! Their Oriland.com website became a winner of the Childnet Award that was given them in Paris, France. Both these projects were acknowledged as high quality creative, educational and fun websites for children and adults. Yuri and Katrin have written more than 30 origami books and instructional CDs, and their works have been exhibited in many countries including several venues in the United States, France, Spain and Canada. The Shumakovs also extend their artistic talents to the realm of photography and music. Katrin is a winner of the Toronto Photo Contest 2010. Yuri is enjoying music composing and sound design. They live in Toronto, Canada, love yoga and a healthy style of life.
