Excellent NURSING book for dialysis/ renal nurses
By David A. Papazian Boyce
There seem to be few books on the care of renal patients written from a nursing perspective. This is one such book and an excellent one at that. The coverage is at a level appropriate for practicing nurses in the field. It's well written, balanced and fairly specific about practice issues. It is British but this is not detrimental to its value for US RNs. Buy it if you can find it at a reasonable price.

Stan Lee and the Rise and Fall of the American Comic Book, by Jordan Raphael, Tom Spurgeon

Based on interviews with Stan Lee and dozens of his colleagues and contemporaries, as well as extensive archival research, this book provides a professional history, an appreciation, and a critical exploration of the face of Marvel Comics. Recognized as a dazzling writer, a skilled editor, a relentless self-promoter, a credit hog, and a huckster, Stan Lee rose from his humble beginnings to ride the wave of the 1940s comics books boom and witness the current motion picture madness and comic industry woes. Included is a complete examination of the rise of Marvel Comics, Lee’s work in the years of postwar prosperity, and his efforts in the 1960s to revitalize the medium after it had grown stale.

From Publishers Weekly
Stan Lee, the cocreator of pop cultural icons like Spider-Man, the Hulk and the X-Men, has long been the subject of debate within the comics community, and Raphael and Spurgeon aim to set the record straight in this well-researched and entertaining book. In the late 1960s, Lee elevated himself into the public eye as the face of Marvel Comics, adopting a colorful persona along the way. Left behind were his c-creators, artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, who never received the credit they deserved. At age 17, in 19TK, Lee (n‚ Stanley Lieber) took a job as an all-purpose assistant at his cousin Martin Goodman's comic book company, Timely. A frustrated novelist, Lee remained at Timely, shielded by Goodman from the industry's mid-century tumults, and eventually he transformed the company into Marvel Comics, steering it and himself into pop culture history. The authors portray Lee as a constantly enthusiastic, slightly daffy figure who turned a Depression-era work ethic and real bursts of creativity into something special. For all of his faults, the authors give Lee proper credit for being a fast and exciting creator who gave superheroes real-world problems and anxieties and used this realism for its maximum potential. Raphael and Spurgeon also chronicle Lee's decades in the wilderness of Hollywood, trying and failing to get decent films made from Marvel properties. Writer Raphael and cartoonist Spurgeon have put together a solid narrative well interwoven with the history of comics. As they demonstrate well, Lee's story is the story of mainstream comic books and one that is important reading. 12 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Raphael and Spurgeon march readers through Lee's first 80 years, taking many compelling byroads along the way to observe the history of American comic-book development, distribution, and readership. Lee created a dynamic and somewhat charismatic persona for himself early in life, and was able to move from technical grunt work to a certain level of co-creativity with more sophisticated artists, and from errand boy to publisher to media mogul. He is, indeed, a part of popular culture with high name recognition. The authors use a variety of resources, including interviews with field specialists and unpublished writings, to substantiate their views of both the man and the medium's evolution. While there are source notes for each chapter, they appear in alphabetical order, making it impossible to find the specific reference to which some controversial declarations are attributed. This will frustrate those doing higher-level research but won't impede casual readers' enjoyment of a colorful man's story told through well-described vignettes.
Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Booklist
Stan Lee is probably the world's most visible comic-book creator, though he has retired from comics writing. His career in the industry dates from 1940, but he toiled anonymously until vitalizing the field in the early 1960s with Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the other, groundbreaking Marvel Comics superheroes. As Marvel's line grew, Lee turned to overseeing the expanding roster of titles and was gradually eased into being company figurehead, traveling the country to shill for the firm. Recently his reputation has been tarnished by accusations that he tried to hog credit for creating Marvel's iconic characters by minimizing the contributions of the artists who worked with him. This well-researched biography usefully corrects Lee's self-serving memoir Excelsior! (2002) and also serves as a critical history of Marvel Comics as well as an overview of the rise and fall of the entire comics industry, now at a commercial nadir, selling a fraction of the number of copies it once did and existing largely, it seems, to develop fodder for blockbuster movies. Stan is his own man, and has taken lumps to prove it.
By Michael Griffith
In comicdom, there are a few creators (Stan Lee, Jim Shooter, various editors at DC Comics, et al) who are seen as bad guys for one reason or another.

Here we have what I think is a balanced account of Stan Lee, who has been seen as everything as a genius to a thief to a visionary to a hack.

Did Stan lie about his creator status of the Marvel Universe. Yes. Did he overstate his role in the creation of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, etc.? Yes, and he has sometimes stated as much (with an uncomfortable squirm, I bet).

Is he a bad guy for doing so? Well....if honest is the best policy, Stan is one for bad policies, I guess.

Love him or hate him, he IS one of the great figures in comic books and it is easily argued that without Stan Lee's contributions, comic books would not have been the social force and just plain fun that they were in the 1960's and certainly Marvel would not be, to this day, on top of the heap of comic book companies.

This book is well-written and holds back only in the slightest. Stan gets the black eye he deserves. But he also gets the pat on the back he deserves, too.

I'll now go on to read his own "Excellsior" with one eye on this book to remind me of the hype that Stan is famous for pulling.

This is a fast read and very entertaining. It offers super pictures (which Ronin Ro's biography of Jack Kirby sadly lacks) of Stan at various stages of his life. ALL Marvel fans and fans of the Silver Age of comics should read it!

Nuff Said!

A great read about Stan
By A guy
Factually this jives with the other books about Marvel's history (except the ones written by Stan himself). A great bit of nostalgia mixed in with some myth-busting revelations. Nothing terribly new here, but a poignant and bittersweet summary of Stan Lee's career up to about 2003-2004.

Culturally relevant teaching is important for all students!
By Sowak21
I read this book for my Critical Pedagogy class (a class for social justice). I’m heading back to school to become a teacher. I rate this book 4 stars and I would recommend it to anyone who works with youth. Ladson-Billings writes about an extensive study she conducted with the purpose of identifying what methodologies have been most successful in helping African American students achieve academic success. In general, the book is full of amazing teaching strategies and inspiring stories. One of the main focuses though is what she calls culturally relevant teaching. I love the principles of this pedagogy and find that it fits in quite well with my own teaching philosophies. According to Ladson-Billings, culturally relevant teaching “is a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes.” Throughout the book, she focuses on African American students and their teachers. Although she doesn’t explicitly speak of other ethnicities, I assume that much of what she writes be relevant and applicable in a general multicultural school setting. I truly enjoyed reading about successful teaching stories strategies but I began the book by thinking she was going to emphasize a clearer strategy of high quality education that minority students will best benefit from… but I finished the book feeling like this was never explicitly stated. I guess for me, I truly believe that ALL students will benefit from the use of culturally relevant teaching. I still gave it 4 stars because the stories are inspiring and, as I said, culturally relevant teaching and critical pedagogy are important in general. In the end, I would recommend this book to anyone who works with youth, but I just felt like I had to sift through the stories a bit to find the anticipated seeds of wisdom.

Optimistic, Smart--Outdated?
By Nolagirl
Ladson-Billings is one of the best known researchers working with African American students and culturally responsive teaching and education. In this book, she spells out her position clearly--she is writing as an African American woman, academic, mother, and student, and intersperses her study with memories of her own experiences as a child in a classroom. She discusses her methodology and other aspects of qualitative research, but this book is ultimately a collection of stories from the field, not a traditional academic work. And what tales they are! Real teachers teaching real kids in a way that the students gain a better understanding of themselves, their position in the world, and how power and social structures affect who they are and will become. She paints an optimistic picture--get to know your students inside and outside of the classroom, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and adopt innovative strategies to help them succeed in school and in life. She's right; educational opportunities for black students in this country are sorely lacking, and all hope is not lost--there are things we can do about it.
But (and it's a big but), many of the ideas she espouses may not be entirely possibly in an era of high-stakes accountability. The freedom to design a curriculum is limited by a focus on standardized test preparation. Teachers are generally discouraged from spending personal time with students outside of the classroom in a highly scrutinized Facebook era. Many of the practices outlined here (more than ten years ago) seem outdated.
So, I'm interested in an update. How does Dr. Ladson-Billings suggest that we overcome obstacles and create new ways of teaching (and teaching teachers) when the focus is on passing the test?

Leading Like Madiba: Leadership Lessons from Nelson Mandela, by Martin Kalungu-Banda

This is a book about a many-sided man whose legacy is his unquenchable desire to spend himself for the well-being of others. Through a series of stories told by men and women about how Nelson Mandela touched their lives, the book shows what it is that has made him one of the greatest people of our time: the way he has managed to inspire people through ordinary human actions. Here in essence are some of the key qualities of great leadership.

Most of the stories in this book are from ordinary men and women. A few came from newspapers, television and magazines. Whether they happened exactly as they are narrated is not important. What is true about these stories is that they are an attempt by people to describe the ‘Madiba phenomenon’. They are a way in which people seek to treasure what Mandela has taught the world. Their significance lies in their ability to inspire those that share and listen to them.

A Must Read for Change Professionals
By Mark McGregor
Rarely has there even been as large a Change Management project as the one that occurred in South Africa. To lead such a change required many people to make changes and sacrifices and to to that meant a visionary leader.

This fascinating little book had me in tears several times as I read through it. The book is not a biography or commentary on Nelson Mandela, but instead is packed full of the stories of people who met him. Through their tales we learn much about Mandela, but more importantly how we behave ourselves and the impact we have on those around us.

It would be wrong in the review to reveal any of those stories, but it is true that those who told their stories say that through their experiences and meetings he transformed their lives.

Each of the stories is a personal one, from each of them we can learn a moral or lesson, hence the title of the book.

I have to say I loved this book so much I bought 30 copies and gave many of them away as gifts to friends in the BPM and Change Management profession.

Truly one of the most inspirational books I have ever read in my life.

Whether you are involved in business or personal change I can't recommend this book highly enough to you.

The American Country Club: Its Origins and Development, by Professor James M. Mayo

The American country club movement parallels the rise of suburbanization in the United States.  Its roots can be found in the exclusive city clubs and summer resorts of the nineteenth century; its growth reflects a desire for permanent and organized places where the wealthy could spend their leisure time.  By the late nineteenth century, mass transportation enabled the wealthy to escape the confines of the city, and suburbanization began.  Their pursuit of leisure—in the form of city clubs, spas, summer resorts, and elite sports—became the foundation for the country club.  Country clubs provided places where the elite could combine their interests in sports, the outdoors, and leisure while separating themselves from those they considered non-elite.  The American Country Club chronicles the social and economic evolution of this elite leisure landscape.

The founding clubs were makeshift landscapes that took advantage of existing conditions, but in the early twentieth century, standard club practices emerged.  Clubhouse design, golf course layouts, financial arrangements, and the rise of club management furthered the country club movement.  Residential developers also learned to use the country club as a way to organize their elite subdivisions and to sell homes.  But the Depression and World War II stifled the growth of country clubs.  Eventually the country club movement regained its momentum, and corporations began to develop country clubs to meet the growing demand for club life and to treat the country club as a revenue source.

Some critics feel that the country club addresses a basic liberty of social choice whereas others view it as an unnecessary source of social discrimination.  Beyond these positions, James Mayo argues that our nation’s political economy is reflected in the country club, which simultaneously thrives as a business and provides social status for its members.

From Publishers Weekly
The words "country club" are almost always accompanied by the word "exclusive" and images of cultural islands of economic power, social status and minority discrimination. Here, Mayo, professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at the Univ. of Kansas and author of The American Grocery Store, traces their history from the dining clubs of the early 1800s, through the city clubs, and then the blossoming of country clubs in the first decades of the 20th century. The rise of the American country club coincided with suburbanization, new methods of transportation and the desire of the elite to separate themselves from the lower classes. But Mayo goes beyond social and economic history. For example, he includes philosophical debates about the country club as an exemplar of republican (little r) values: one magazine writer went so far as to say "[t]he country club seems almost destined to satisfy the somewhat communistic dream" of such utopian experiments as Brook Farm. The role of sports, of women, of the Great Depression, of WWII and of the rebellious 1960s are all reflected in the changing face of the country club and are all adeptly and readably charted by Mayo. Last but not least, this is also a fascinating study of the growth of an American business?how problems of transportation, location, rules, management, activities, design and maintenance led to new solutions and new problems. Mayo turns one pocket of American history inside out to show how the country club reflects not just wealth, but America's political landscape. 38 b&w photos.

From Library Journal
Mayo (architecture and urban planning, Univ. of Kansas) writes a thoughtful history of the country club in a style similar to his earlier The American Grocery Store (Greenwood, 1993). Using sources that include histories of individual clubs, he first writes of the clubs' origins, starting with exclusive clubs that were established in the cities by men of the elite during the early 19th century. The rules of these clubs provided the guidelines for their successors, the country clubs. The popularity of outdoor activities made the clubs desirable, while improvements in transportation allowed the elite to move to the suburbs and enjoy them. Mayo writes about the impact of golf on the clubs and how clubs managed to survive during the lean years of the Great Depression. Finally, he describes the various architectural styles of country clubs, the development of a club management profession, and the use of country clubs by real estate developers. This well-written overview brings together a variety of factors in the history of country club development. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.?Linda McEwan, Elgin Community Coll., Ill.

From Booklist
To members, a validation of social status, to outsiders, a symbol of monetary or ethnic discrimination, the country club reached its recognizable form after hothouse evolution in the late 1800s. Mayo writes up an institutional history that overarches the parochial histories of individual clubs, widening his overview to reach readers interested in sports, landscaping, architecture, or sociology. After explaining the country club's origin as a sylvan alternative to the urban men's club, Mayo lays out his particular passion for the design of clubhouses. Dozens of photographs crown his critiques of such buildings, which developed to accommodate the country club's evolving athletic emphasis. Originally equestrian sports occupied members, followed by fads for lawn tennis; now clubs are identified with golf. Mayo interestingly quotes what turn-of-the-century critics thought of the clubs (Henry James loved them) and then winds up with the clubs' post^-World War II metamorphosis into a business replete with a managers' association. The only history available, libraries might take a risk and be surprised by Mayo's work. Gilbert Taylor
